Boston (Back Bay), Massachusetts Residence

The owners of a brownstone condominium unit in Boston’s Back Bay purchased the neighboring unit below and hired McMahon Architects to assist in joining the two halves to create a Single Family home for their growing family. The original existing central stair, which had been altered over the years was transformed back into a continuous and open staircase which now links all floors of the enlarged single living space.  The original quarter sawn oak details were replicated on the new stair sections to produce a continuous “original” staircase top floor to the newly renovated lower level.  The subterranean lower “garden” level was completely renovated and reprogrammed to include a new family room, bathroom and playroom complete with Sliding Red ‘barn’ door.  The rear exterior wall of the garden level was opened up by adding new windows to provide light and views to the back yard.

The main parlor level includes a restored front vestibule with new Encaustic tile floor and new mudroom.  The original over door stained glass window was fully restored.   Correct attention to late 1800s period details, such as hardware and finishes were implemented throughout the main parlor level. A modern day front parlor fireplace was replaced with a repurposed antique oak fireplace surround and new marble hearth. Renovations and updates were also made to the parlor level powder room and kitchen. The upper floors were renovated and reprogrammed to include a new contemporary master bedroom suite.  The overall renovation and restoration resulted in a family home that will provide quality and comfort for years to come.
